6.5" x 10" x 1.5" hard-bound book with taupe fabric covered exterior accented with black leather spine and corners. Stamped in gold along the spine "LADY'S BOOK / VOL. 18-19". Contains 1839 edition magazines. The interior of the front cover bears a nameplate affixed to the blue, yellow, green and white marble-like patterned liner. The name plate is white with a black illustration of an arm grasping a curling serpent. It reads "EX-LIBRIS / EDWARD SEEBER". On the opposing page a newspaper article has been pasted, entitled "Godey Magazine Ended Crudity in Old Prints: Costume Illustrations from Old Foreign and American Issues Now Sought by Collectors" by Sadie U. Raymond. The magazine was started in 1830 by Louis A. Godey and "reigned supreme as the monarch of fashions" for America. Printed in Philadelphia and sent out through subscription. Magazines include: articles about architecture, fashion, housekeeping, cooking, sewing, preserving food, ettiquette, education, and art; cultural tid-bits from around the world; tips for running an economic household; recipes; literary reviews and notices; short works of fiction; poetry; sheet music; and colored fashion plates. |
