6.5" x 10" x 1.5" hard-bound book with brown and red agate-like patterned exterior accented with brown leather spine and corners. A black name plate has been pasted to the front reading "Mrs. Kate Back" in gold lettering. Stamped in gold along the spine "GODEY'S LADY'S BOOK / VOL. LIII". Contains the July through December 1856 editions. The interior of the front cover bears a nameplate affixed to the light pink liner. The name plate is white with a black illustration of an arm grasping a curling serpent. It reads "EX-LIBRIS / EDWARD SEEBER". Written in pencil on the opposing liner page reads "Anah Chamberlain". The magazine was started in 1830 by Louis A. Godey and "reigned supreme as the monarch of fashions" for America. Printed in Philadelphia and sent out through subscription. Magazines include: articles about architecture, fashion, housekeeping, cooking, sewing, preserving food, ettiquette, education, and art; cultural tid-bits from around the world; tips for running an economic household; recipes; literary reviews and notices; short works of fiction; poetry; sheet music; and colored fashion plates. |
