Description |
6.9375" x 5" computer scanned reproduction of a black and white photo (in postcard form) dating to the late 1800s or turn of the century. The photo depicts the North side of the Bloomington square. The stretch of tall brick and limestone buildings include the facades of the following businesses: Breeden's department store and Neelo & Co. Breeden's is covered in signage indicating its Co-Op status, inviting individuals to "share in the profits". Ladies and men dressed in Victorian style clothing and hats wander up and down the sidewalk. Three horsedrawn carriages wait along the curb. Emerging from the right upper side of the photo frame is a hanging street light. The numerous wires extending from the hanging filament bulb denotes an electrified lamp. Therefore, the photo must date after the mid to late 1890s. Underneath the streetlamp is an expanse of dirt road. the photo was taken from the opposite (South) side of the street looking North East toward the North side of the square. Along the top left corner of the postcard a subject identification has been printed over the photo "North Side of Square. BLOOMINGTON, Ind." |
