Southern Indiana Sporting Goods Fire |
Description |
Southern Indiana Sporting Goods Company fire photograph, 8"x10", 1934. Photograph is a reproduction inkjet print from the original 1934 photograph that was scanned and archived for the Faces and Places project at the Monroe County Historical Society in 2007. Image is of black smoke rising from the brick, two-story building housing the Southern Indiana Sporting Goods Company and the Indiana Theater. The building has awnings on each side above groupings of the second story windows. The Indiana Theater sign is a vertical, ornate sign extended out from the building by a metal structure and hanging over the theater's metal awning. The words "SPORTING GOODS" are printed in white on the front, right side of the building above the printed words "PAYS TO PLAY". There are five persons in front who seem to be watching, one person holding a fire hose up off the sidewalk and another person aiming water at the fire with the firehose. To the right of the building on fire is a shorter building with two signs saying "City Market House Fancy Fruits and Early Vegetables" on the front and side. The windows on the front of the City Market House are framed in white and it appears that an awning that was on the front of the City Market House is torn and hanging in pieces. To the left of the building on fire is a three-story building with a "Hardware" sign hanging in front beginning at the third floor. In front of the City Market House are wooden crates, bags and barrels. The firehose wraps around the crates, bags and barrels and winds around into the street in front. The entire lower right corner of the image is either smoke covered or has been damaged. |
