Black and white photograph of a working limestone quarry, 11.0625" x 13.9375", date unknown. Excellent photo depicting Indiana's limestone industry. At center, there is an active quarry. In this area, there are two railtracks. On one of these tracks, there are three pieces of industrial machinery spewing black smoke. A single man is visible sitting on each of these. Eight or nine men are visible in the quarry area moving about. There is a pile of coal in the center of the quarry pit. There are some wires and cables running into and out of the quarry. At right, there is a huge pile of limestone blocks. In the foreground, there is a line, a pile of limestone pieces, (refuse, these are relatively small shale like pieces) is visible. Behind the quarry, a railroad line runs horizontally across the photo. A "Monon C.I. & L" car is visible at left. Next to the railroad track, there are two large piles of limestone blocks and slabs. On this higher level, there are two large cranes with numerous cables stretched in each direction from the tops of these cranes. The background and the horizon area are made up of thick green trees. In the bottom right corner, "603" is written in white. |
