North Side of Square |
Description |
6.9375" x 5.0625" computer scanned reproduction of a black and white photo dating to the early 1900s. The photo depicts the North side of the Bloomington downtown square. The row of stone and brick buildings include the following business facades: Urmey Kinser; S.L. Harrell Furniture & Undertaking; and S[obstructed]p & Baker Ladies Bazaar. At the end of the row of buildings (looking West) is the thin cylindrical steeple; possibly the Bethel A.M.E Church at the corner of 214 West Sixth Street listed in the 1920 city directory. Lining the concrete sidewalks are a series of tall limestone street lamps featuring three large globe light fixtures. These particular street lights were in use between 1910 and 1922. Therefore, based on the absence of the before mentioned businesses in the 1920 city directory, and the life span of the street lamps, this photo most likely dates between 1910 and 1919. The perspective of the photo is from the South side of the dirt road looking North West toward the North side of the square. |
