Black and white photograph of First Methodist church burning, 6"x9", April 7, 1937. Portrait orientation, with glossy finish and white border. The photograph shows the First Methodist Church of Bloomington burning. It is a limestone building with elements of Gothic style, including square corner turrets and pointed decorative parapets at the front and on the side over large stained glass windows with pointed arches. All of the stained glass windows appear to be the same basic shape - pointed arches - but different sizes. There is a large domed tower / steeple in the center, and that is what appears to be burning. It is engulfed in white and gray smoke. The church appears to be dark in color (but the photograph is a little dark). There is a large tree in the background on the left, and another building on the right. There is a crowd of people in coats and hats on the ground watching the burning, and the photograph is standing amidst that crowd. Those people are in the foreground, and are not entirely in focus (the focus is on the church). |
